Kōkua Hawaiʻi Foundation (KHF) is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization founded in 2003 by Kim and Jack Johnson, that supports environmental education in the schools and communities of Hawaiʻi.
We provide opportunities that enhance appreciation for and understanding of the environment to inspire lifelong stewards of the earth.
KHF cultivates long-lasting behavior change around sustainability by engaging students, educators, families, and community in hands-on environmental stewardship. We provide inspiration, resources, experiences, and connections that:
Promote Local & Healthy Food Awareness, Production & Consumption
Empower Viable Waste Reduction Practices & Systems
Foster ʻĀina- & Place-Based Respect, Understanding, and Practice
Internship Summary:
The Kōkua Hawaiʻi Foundation Post-High School Internship Program offers individuals a meaningful, hands-on learning opportunity while supporting environmental education, sustainability, and community resiliency in Hawaiʻi. Interns choose one of 3 primary focus tracks—Farm Focus, Social Enterprises, or Creative Contribution based on their interests, academic goals, and organizational capacity. Each track allows students to work directly with KHF staff to develop specialized knowledge and skills in their chosen area while also contributing to the broader mission of the organization.
Regardless of track, all interns gain cross-functional experience by participating in organization-wide activities such as farm workdays, community events, educational programming, and sustainability initiatives. Through this integrated approach, interns build a strong foundation in place-based learning, nonprofit operations, and the values of mālama ʻāina (care for the land), food justice, community engagement, and waste reduction. Interns are encouraged to explore the interconnections between people, place, food, and waste while learning how to lead and inspire change within their communities.
We encourage applicants with a beginner level proficiency in ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi or interest and commitment to learning to apply. We also prioritize applicants with a strong connection to Hawaiʻi and its people. A strong commitment to sustainability, intersectional environmentalism, and growing a healthier future for Hawaiʻi is also preferred.
In this role, students will gain experience in the following tasks/activities:

Interns will assist with the daily operations of the farm, including planting, maintaining, and harvesting crops, while also supporting farm-based educational activities for students and community members. This track emphasizes the importance of hands-on learning and place-based education, enabling interns to develop both technical farming skills and a deeper understanding of Hawaiʻi’s history and ʻāina-based values.
Key Responsibilities may include:
- Assist with soil preparation, irrigation, planting, crop maintenance, and harvest activities on the farm.
- Support farm-based educational activities, that may include farm field trips, farm tours, high school internships, and community engagement.

Interns may support aspects of the ʻĀina Farm Stand and Kōkua General Store, both of which support local farmers and makers, provide plastic-free alternatives, and fund KHF environmental education initiatives. Interns in this track will also have the opportunity to help amplify KHF’s efforts by supporting products that align with KHFʻs mission and promote ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi.
Key Responsibilities may include:
- Assist with daily operations, inventory management, and sales at the ʻĀina Farm Stand and/or Kōkua General Store.

This flexible, open-ended track welcomes individuals to bring forward unique talents—such as video production, photography, graphic design, data analysis, curriculum development, writing, dance, or other creative and technical skills—that can help amplify and advance KHF’s programs and community impact.
Interns in this track will collaborate with staff to identify meaningful projects that align their skill set with organizational needs. Whether helping to tell stories through multimedia, creating educational materials, improving systems, or supporting outreach and community events and workdays, students in this track are invited to propose how they can kōkua to our collective mission.
